Every enterprise with a digital consumer-facing surface – e-commerce, travel booking, media – is running the same experiment: whenever a user spends time on our platform, can we show them the right thing right now?
For most traditional recommendation systems the answer is no. Most systems determine product rankings and placement before a user session begins, relying on historical interaction data and interests rather than what the user is doing in the moment or what they’re interested in today.
This simply is not good enough when customer acquisition costs keep rising. Consumer expectations for personalized content keep climbing, consumers have more choice for how they spend their time and money than ever before, and enterprises need to make the most out of every opportunity to convert visitors into customers, and customers into return customers.
At a moment in time when enterprise AI outcomes have been dubious at best, Sequen has proven that ranking is one area where return on investment can be immediate and quantifiable.
A Founder Who’s Done This Before
Sequen was founded by CEO Zoë Weil, whose ranking work at Etsy is credited with more than $1 billion in GMV uplift in a single year, alongside a team that built and scaled ranking infrastructure at companies like Etsy, Meta, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
We first noticed Sequen when it emerged from stealth in the spring of 2025, met the team through its earlier investors, Greycroft and White Star Capital, and spent the following year getting to know Zoë before the Series B came together. What we share with Zoë is a belief that the next decade of enterprise AI will be won by platforms enterprises trust to improve the decisions that drive their business, one customer at a time.
A ranking system predicts the next best item or action for a customer. These predictions are continuously scored against measurable business outcomes like revenue, conversion, and engagement, which is why the return on investment shows up quickly, and in numbers the business already tracks.
Built to Get Smarter With Every Click
Sequen’s integrated platform combines frontier ranking models, automated experimentation, and ultra-low-latency infrastructure to dynamically re-rank content in under 25 milliseconds, and it now serves more than 270 billion in-session recommendations per month. This brings the in-session personalization consumers know from apps like TikTok to Fortune 500 companies like Wayfair, and enterprises like Priceline, working with far sparser data than a social media feed. Customers can deploy Sequen through its fully managed Ranking API or through Recursive Ranking Intelligence (RRI), which enables sophisticated machine learning teams to build and improve models they own, in an environment they control.
RRI works as an autonomous AI researcher. It designs, runs, and evaluates thousands of offline experiments, so teams can test far more ideas, identify statistically meaningful gains faster, and ship better ranking models. With RRI, Sequen can condense two years of R&D into under a week.
Sequen’s advantage compounds without mixing customer data. Each enterprise’s data stays under its own control and its insights stay its own. What Sequen carries forward is an improved understanding of the problem itself: which signals matter, when to use certain architectures, and how to efficiently train new models. Each deployment raises the floor for the next one.
Setting the Bar: The Wayfair Partnership
Wayfair has run a rigorous in-house ranking and personalization program for years. Within the first month of working with Sequen, it saw a material profit lift, and its CTO, Fiona Tan, has said publicly that Sequen “cleared a bar our in-house models had set high, and has continued to deliver statistically significant gains in conversion, revenue, and profitability with each iteration.” Wayfair is now expanding Sequen across more surfaces, stores, and geographies. This was one of many proof points that excited us about Sequen: integrating with a sophisticated existing system, improving on it, and then scaling it in production.
Betting on the Default Ranking Layer
Today, Sequen announced a $90 million Series B, an oversubscribed round led by Prysm Capital with participation from existing investors White Star Capital and Threshold Ventures, alongside the launch of Recursive Ranking Intelligence.
We backed Sequen because it has turned deep ranking expertise into a platform that produces measurable value, with a moat that deepens with every deployment. That accumulated technical and deployment knowledge would be difficult for any individual team, or frontier AI lab, to replicate.
Ranking in consumer surfaces is only the first application. Any decision an enterprise makes continuously against a measurable objective, in pricing, advertising, inventory, logistics, or compute, is a ranking problem. Sequen has the chance to become the layer enterprises build those decisions on.
